  “Today, I’m going to talk about new discoveries.”

  Until the 16th century, the center of the universe was Earth. This was obvious, and everyone believed it. But Copernicus asked, "Is it really true?" His question started a big change. Today, Earth isn't the center of the universe anymore. This story teaches us an important lesson. We should always question obvious things. Then we can make discoveries.

  There are other examples in history. In the past, humans couldn't travel through the air. But some people began to wonder, "Can we travel through the air?" The Wright brothers also asked this question, and they finally made an airplane. The same went for the submarine. Traveling under the water looked impossible, but people finally found a way.

  It's still going on today. Where does meat come from? Of course, it comes from animals. But some scientists wanted to get meat in a different way. "How about plants?" they wondered. They used beans and peas, and they made new, healthy "meat." Surprisingly, it doesn't taste like beans or peas. It tastes exactly like real meat.

  Do you want to find out new things? Then look around and question obvious things, just like history's great inventors!

 Saturday, May 26th

We arrived at the flea market around ten o'clock. I put our items on the table. My sister shouted, "Good items here!" People enjoyed looking at them, but they didn't buy anything.

Then, a girl came. She said, “I like these shoes. But they're a little expensive." "Okay, then you can have a 20 percent discount," I said. She was our first customer!

Time passed, and we got tired. Then a woman said, "Keep trying!" She had a table next to us. She gave some bread to us. We started shouting again, "Best prices here!"

우리는 10시쯤 벼룩시장에 도착했다. 나는 우리 물건들을 테이블 위에 놓았다. 내 여동생은 “여기 좋은 물건들이 있어요!”라고 소리쳤다. 사람들은 그것들을 보는 것을 즐겼지만, 아무것도 사지 않았다.

그때, 한 소녀가 다가왔다. 그녀는 “이 신발이 마음에 들어요. 하지만 가격이 조금 비싸네요.” 라고 말했다. “좋아요, 그럼 20퍼센트 할인을 받을 수 있어요.” 라고 내가 말했다. 그녀는 우리의 첫 손님이었다!

시간이 흘렀고, 우리는 지쳤다. 그때, 한 여자분이 “계속 노력하렴!” 이라고 말했다. 그녀는 우리 옆자리에 테이블이 있었다. 그녀는 우리에게 약간의 빵을 주었다. 우리는 “여기가 최저가예요!” 라고 다시 소리치기 시작했다.

In the end, we sold many things. How much did we make?

We got 24,000 won. That’s great! How will we use this money? First, we will save half of the money. Then, we will donate 20 percent of the rest for hungry children. After that, we will go shopping. Maybe we will buy things at the flea market at low prices!

본문 1

  My name is Tanga. I’m a middle school student in South Africa. Last Saturday, my volunteer club went to an elephant home near my school. There were many poor elephants in the elephant home. We helped them.

   Our day started early. First, we fed the elephants. Elephants eat a lot, so we brought a lot of food to them. There was one baby elephant. I fed milk to him. He was so cute!

  Next, we cleaned up elephant dung. My friends didn’t like this job, but it was OK for me. The smell wasn’t that bad. I also learned a fun fact about elephant dung. People make paper from it. Elephant dung paper! How interesting!

  내 이름은 Tanga이다. 나는 남아프리카 공화국에 사는 중학생이다. 지난주 토요일에 우리 자원봉사 동아리는 학교 근처에 있는 코끼리 보호소에 갔다. 코끼리 보호소에는 불쌍한 코끼리들이 많이 있었다. 우리는 그들을 도와주었다.

  우리의 하루는 일찍 시작되었다. 첫 번째로, 우리는 코끼리들에게 먹이를 주었다. 코끼리는 많이 먹는다. 그래서 우리는 코끼리들에게 많은 먹이를 가져다주었다. 아기 코끼리 한 마리가 있었다. 나는 그 코끼리에게 우유를 먹였다. 무척 귀여웠다!

  그 다음에, 우리는 코끼리 똥을 치웠다. 친구들은 이 일을 싫어했지만, 나는 괜찮았다. 냄새가 그렇게 나쁘지는 않았다. 나는 또한 코끼리 똥에 관한 재미있는 사실 하나를 배웠다. 사람들은 그것으로 종이를 만든다. 코끼리 똥 종이라니! 매우 흥미롭다!

본문 2

  After lunch, we took the elephants to a pond for a mud bath. Elephants’ skin is very sensitive, and mud protects it from the sun. Their bath time was my favorite part of the day. We didn’t do much. We just played with the elephants. Everybody laughed a lot.

 Our work was over around six. I was tired but very happy.

  점심 식사 후에, 우리는 진흙 목욕을 시키기 위해 코끼리들을 연못으로 데려갔다. 코끼리들의 피부는 매우 예민한데, 진흙은 햇빛으로부터 피부를 보호한다. 코끼리들의 목욕 시간은 하루 중 내가 가장 좋아한 부분이었다. 우리는 많은 것을 하지는 않았다. 우리는 그저 코끼리들과 놀았다. 모두가 많이 웃었다.

  우리의 일은 6시쯤 끝났다. 나는 피곤했지만 매우 행복했다.

Wife: Kids, come and sit down. We’ll have dinner.

Son 1: Brother, move a little! I can’t sit.

Son 2: To where?

Wife: Kids, be quiet and just sit down!

Daughter 1: Mom, our house is so small!

Daughter 2: Dad, please do something about it.

Hassan: Hmm...

The next day, Hassan goes to Nasreddin Hodja, a wise man.

Hassan: You’re a wise man. Can you please help me? I have a big family, but my house is so small.

Nasreddin: Hmm. Do you have chickens?

Hassan: Chickens? Yes. I have five chickens.

Nasreddin: Good. Take them into the house!

Hassan: What?

Nasreddin: Just follow my advice!

그 다음 날, Hassan은 현자인 Nasreddin Hodja에게 간다.

Hassan: 당신은 현자이십니다. 저를 좀 도와주시겠어요? 저희는 대가족입니다, 그런데 집이 너무 작아요.

The next morning, Hassan and his wife run to Nasreddin’s house.

Hassan: It’s terrible now. Me, my wife, four kids, and five chickens...

Nasreddin: Do you have other animals?

Wife: Well, we have two donkeys and three goats.

Nasreddin: Take them all into the house!

Hassan: But... OK, I’ll do that.

다음 날 아침, Hassan과 그의 아내가 Nasreddin의 집으로 뛰어간다.

Hassan: 지금 끔찍해요. 저와 아내, 아이들 넷, 그리고 닭 다섯 마리……

The next morning, Hassan runs to Nasreddin’s house again with his wife and daughters. They are upset.

Hassan: Our house is so full.

Wife: We can’t sleep.

Daughters 1, 2: We can’t even sit.

Nasreddin: Good! Now, take all the animals out of the house.

Sons 1, 2: Now our house is very large.

Wife: Yes. Thank you so much.

(Nasreddin just smiles.)

  Hi! How's everything? I'm enjoying my trip to Korea. Right now, I'm in Insa-dong. Tourists visit art shops and eat traditional food here. On this street, my favorite place is Ssamziegil. There are about 70 stores here. They sell special gifts. I'm sending some presents to you. You can learn about Korea from them. I will write to you again soon.

  This is buchae, a Korean fan. Artists make these fans from bamboo and hanji, traditional Korean paper. Then they draw beautiful pictures on them. You can see mugunghwa on your buchae. This flower is a symbol of the Korean people's strong spirit.

  I'm also sending yut for yunnori. It is a traditional Korean board game. In the game, you throw four sticks. They make five different combinations. They decide your move on the board. The combinations are do, gae, geol, yut, and mo. These names mean animals. Koreans play this game during holidays. We will play it together later!
