Sumin’s school is holding a science fair. There are so many interesting booths. The “Science of Air” booth catches Sumin’s eye.

수민이네 학교는 과학 박람회를 열고 있다. 그곳에는 재미있는 전시관이 많이 있다. ‘공기의 과학’이라는 전시관이 수민이의 눈길을 끈다.

 

 

Hajun: Welcome to the “Science of Air” booth. Let’s do an interesting experiment. Here, I have two empty cans. I’m going to crush the red can. Now, the red one is flat and the blue one isn’t. I will put them in the water tank. Which one will float? Why?

Sumin: Well, both will float because they are very light.

Hajun: Let’s see.

Sumin: Only the blue one floats! Why?

Hajun: Because of air! The blue can has enough space for air. Air is lighter than water. So, the blue can floats in the water.

Sumin: The red can doesn’t have much space for air. So it can’t float.

Hajun: You’re right.

하준: ‘공기의 과학’ 전시관에 온 것을 환영해요. 재미있는 실험을 해봐요. 여기 빈 캔 두 개가 있어요. 제가 빨간 캔을 찌그러뜨릴 겁니다. 이제 빨간 캔은 납작하고 파란 캔은 그렇지 않아요. 두 캔을 수조에 넣을 겁니다. 어느 캔이 물에 뜰까요? 왜 그럴까요?

수민: 음, 둘 다 아주 가벼우니까 둘 다 뜰 것 같아요.

하준: 한 번 보죠.

수민: 파란 캔만 떠요! 왜 그렇죠?

하준: 공기 때문이에요! 파란 캔에는 공기가 있을 충분한 공간이 있죠. 공기는 물보다 가볍고요. 그래서 파란 캔이 물에 뜨는 겁니다.

수민: 빨간 캔에는 공기가 들어갈 많은 공간이 없어요. 그래서 물에 뜰 수 없군요.

하준: 맞아요.

 

 

     

Sumin: The secret is air!

Hajun: Yes. It works for a large ship, too.

Sumin: Really? Where’s the air in a ship?

Hajun: A ship has a large empty space in the bottom.

Sumin: In the bottom?

Hajun: Yes. There is air in that space. Because of the air, the density of the ship decreases.

Sumin: Aha! So a large ship can float. Air is so powerful!

 

수민: 비밀은 공기군요!

하준: 그렇죠. 이것은 큰 배에도 똑같이 작용해요.

수민: 정말요? 배 어디에 공기가 있어요?

하준: 배는 바닥에 커다란 빈 공간이 있어요.

수민: 바닥에요?

하준: 그래요. 그 공간에 공기가 있죠. 그 공기 때문에 배의 밀도가 낮아지고요.

수민: 아하! 그래서 커다란 배도 뜰 수 있군요. 공기는 정말 강력하네요!
