On October 31, people around the world celebrate Halloween.
The holiday comes from an ancient Irish festival.
Irish people believed that ghosts returned to Earth on Halloween.
This special day has many scary but fun traditions.
Let's learn about two of them.
Jack o' Lanterns
In the past, Irish people carved faces into potatoes or turnips for Halloween.
They did this to scare ghosts.
Some Irish people brought this tradition to the United States.
They started carving faces into pumpkins because it was easier.
Now jack o' lanterns are everywhere on Halloween.
Trick or Treat!
Irish people used to leave food outside their houses for ghosts on Halloween.
Later, rich people in England replaced this tradition.
They started giving "soul cakes" to poor people.
But in America, people give candy on Halloween.
To get candy, children knock on people's doors and say "Trick or Treat!"
