 One day, five wise men met on the road. They agreed to travel together. On the way, however, they became lost in a thick forest. Before walking any further, they decided to stop and find the best way out.

 어느 날 지혜로운 다섯 남자가 길에서 만났다. 그들은 여행을 함께 하기로 했다. 그러나 도중에 그들은 울창한 숲속에서 길을 잃게 되었다. 더 멀리 가기 전에 그들은 멈추고 빠져나갈 최선의 방법을 찾기로 결정했다.

 

 

 

 

 After thinking for a while, the first man said, “I strongly feel that we should go left.”

 The second man said, “We should go right, because right also means ‘correct.’”

 Then the third man said, “Let’s walk back. We came that way, so we can leave that way. Then we can walk around the forest.”

 The fourth man disagreed and said, “I think we should keep walking straight. The forest cannot go on forever. A new path will open.”

 Looking at them all, the fifth man shook his head and said, "I know how to solve this. Just wait.”

 

 잠시 동안 생각한 후, 첫 번째 남자가 말했다. “나는 우리가 왼쪽으로 가야 한다는 생각이 강하게 들어요."

 두 번째 남자가 말했다. “우리는 오른쪽으로 가야 해요. 왜냐하면 ‘오른쪽'은 또한 ’옳은’이라는 의미이기 때문이죠.”

 그러자 세 번째 남자가 말했다. “다시 돌아갑시다. 우리는 그 길로 왔으니 그 길로 나갈 수 있어요. 그러면 우리는 숲을 빙 돌아서 갈 수 있고요.”

 네 번째 남자가 동의하지 않고 말했다. “나는 우리가 계속 똑바로 걸어 나가야 한다고 생각해요. 숲이 영원히 계속될 수는 없어요. 새로운 길이 열릴 것입니다.”

 그들 모두를 바라보면서, 다섯 번째 남자가 고개를 저으며 말했다. “나는 이것을 해결하는 방법을 알아요. 잠깐 기다려 보세요.”

 

 

 

 

 

 He started to climb the tallest tree he could find. As he climbed, everyone else decided to go their separate ways.

 When the fifth man reached the top, he could see the whole forest. Looking at all the paths, he found the shortest way out. He hurried down to tell the others. However, when he got to the bottom, everyone was gone. He thought to himself, Where did they go? I found the best way out. He thought they were all wrong and he was the only wise man.

 

 

 그는 그가 찾을 수 있는 가장 높은 나무를 오르기 시작했다. 그가 나무를 오르고 있을 때 다른 모든 사람들은 각자 서로 다른 길을 가기로 결정했다.

 However, he was wrong. Everyone was wise. Each man had chosen his path and created his future.

 The man who went to the left walked deeper into the forest. He was attacked by wild animals and almost died of hunger. Soon he learned how to protect himself and find food. In the end, he made his way out of the forest and taught others survival skills.

 The man who went to the right met a group of thieves. They took everything from him and made him join them. While he was with them, he showed them great kindness. The thieves were moved by his kindness and learned from his wisdom. Later, they also became wise men.

 The man who walked back created a safe path around the forest. Using this path, people could get where they were going without getting lost, even though the trip took a little longer.

 

 

 그러나 그가 틀렸다. 모두가 지혜로웠다. 각자 자신의 길을 선택했고 자신의 미래를 만들어 냈다.

 왼쪽으로 간 남자는 숲속으로 더 깊이 걸어 들어갔다. 그는 야생 동물들의 공격을 받았고 거의 굶어 죽을 뻔했다. 곧 그는 자신을 지키고 먹을 것을 찾는 방법을 터득했다. 결국 그는 숲을 빠져나왔고 다른 사람들에게 생존 기술을 가르쳤다.

 오른쪽으로 간 남자는 도둑 무리를 만났다. 그들은 그에게서 모든 것을 빼앗고 그를 그들과 합류하게 했다. 그는 그들과 함께 있는 동안 그들에게 큰 친절을 베풀었다. 도둑들은 그의 친절에 감동을 받았고 그의 지혜에서 교훈을 얻었다. 후에 그들 또한 지혜로운 사람들이 되었다.

 뒤돌아 간 남자는 숲 주변에 안전한 길을 만들었다. 사람들은 이 길을 이용할 때 길을 잃지 않고 그들이 가고자 하는 곳에 다다를 수 있었다. 비록 이동 시간이 조금 더 오래 걸렸지만 말이다.

 

 

 The man who went straight became a pioneer. He left the forest and discovered places no one else had been before. Thanks to him, people could enjoy these new beautiful lands.

 The man who climbed the tree became a guide. Since he had found many different paths, he was able to teach people how to find the quickest ways to their destinations.

 This is how the five men found their own paths. Like them, we are each on our own journey in life, and we cannot compare one journey to another. You have to create your own path. Listen to yourself, make a decision, and act on it. Then, someday, you will realize that you have been living the life that is right for you.

 

 똑바로 간 남자는 개척자가 되었다. 그는 숲을 벗어나 아무도 이전에 가 본 적이 없는 곳들을 발견했다. 그 남자 덕분에, 사람들은 이 새롭고 아름다운 땅을 누릴 수 있었다.

 나무 위로 올라간 남자는 안내자가 되었다. 그는 여러 다양한 길을 발견했었기 때문에, 사람들에게 그들의 목적지에 이르는 가장 빠른 길을 찾는 법을 가르쳐 줄 수 있었다.

 이런 식으로 다섯 남자는 자신만의 길을 찾아냈다. 그들처럼 우리는 각자 삶 속에서 자신만의 여행을 하고 있고, 우리는 한 여정을 다른 여정과 비교할 수 없다. 당신은 당신만의 길을 만들어 가야 한다. 자신의 목소리를 듣고, 결정하고, 그 결정에 따라 행동하라. 그러면 언젠가 당신은 당신에게 맞는 삶을 살아가고 있다는 것을 깨닫게 될 것이다.
