Curling with Rare Granite

Curling is a team sport that uses a special kind of stone that is moved around on a sheet of ice on a curling rink.

The stone used for this sport is called a curling stone, a slide stone that is made of a special kind of granite.

The majority of the granite used for these stones only come from Ailsa Craig, an island off the Ayrshire Coast of Scotland.

The two types of granite stones collected from this place are called Blue Hone and Ailsa Craig Common Green.

Blue Hone is used to make the layer of the curling stone that touches the ice,

and the Ailsa Craig Common Green is used to make the middle section called striking band.

These types of granite are the preferred materials for Olympic-grade curling stones because they have very low water absorption rates,

and they do not easily shatter, allowing the curling stones to maintain their integrity

despite frequently coming in contact with ice and colliding with other curling stones.

The limited supply of Ailsa Granite makes Olympic-grade curling stones quite pricey.

One curling stone can cost thousands of U.S. dollars each.

However, this is still seen as a good deal because these elite curling stones can last for more than 5 decades.

컬링은 컬링장의 얼음판 위에서 움직여지는 특별한 종류의 돌을 사용하는 팀스포츠이다.

이 스포츠에 사용되는 돌은 특별한 종류의 화강암으로 만들어진 미끄러지는 돌로 컬링 스톤이라고 불린다.

이들 돌에 사용되는 화강암의 대부분은 스코틀랜드의 에일셔 해안 너머의 에일셔 크레이그에서만 나온다.

이 장소에서 채집되는 두 종류의 화강암은 블루 호온과 에일셔 크레이그 커먼 그린이라고 불린다.

블루 호온은 얼음에 닿는 컬링 스톤의 층을 만드는데 사용되고

에일셔 크레이그 커먼 그린은 스트라이킹 밴드라고 불리는 중간 부분을 만드는 데 사용된다.

이들 화강암의 종류들은 매우 낮은 물 흡수율이 낮고 쉽게 부서지지 않아

얼음과 잦은 접촉과 다른 컬링 스톤과 충돌해도 온전하게 해주기 때문에

올림픽급 컬링 스톤을 위해 선호되는 화강암이다.

에일셔 화강암의 제한된 공급은 올림픽급의 컬링 스톤을 제법 비싸게 만든다.

컬링 스톤 한 개는 미화 수천 달러에 달할 수 있다.

하지만, 이들 좋은 컬링 스톤은 50년 이상 쓸 수 있기 때문에 적절한 가격으로 여겨진다.
