Antoni Gaudi is one of the greatest architects Spain has ever produced. Gaudi is known for his unique and imaginative style. The following is the interview Bella Torres, an art reporter from The Barcelona Times, had with Mr. Gaudi.

 Antoni Gaudi는 스페인이 배출한 가장 위대한 건축가 중의 한 명이다. Gaudi는 그의 독특하고 상상력이 넘치는 스타일로 알려져 있다. 다음은 ‘바르셀로나 타임즈의 예술부기자인 Bella Torres가 Gaudi와 가진 인터뷰이다.

 

 

Let's start by talking about your childhood. What were you like when you were young?

당신의 어린 시절에 대한 이야기로 시작해봅시다. 당신은 어릴 때 어땠나요?

 

 

Gaudi: Well, I was often sick when I was young. Since I could not play outside like other kids, I spent much of my time observing nature.

Gaudi: 글쎄요, 저는 어릴 때 자주 아팠어요. 다른 아이들처럼 밖에 나가 놀 수 없었기 때문에 저는 제 시간의 많은 부분을 자연을 관찰하며 보냈죠.

 

So that's why nature has had such a great influence on your designs.

그것이 바로 자연이 당신의 디자인에 큰 영향을 끼친 이유로군요.

Gaudi: I guess so. For example, the lines in my buildings are not straight but soft and wavy. You know, lines we see in nature are not straight.

Gaudi: 그런 것 같습니다. 예를 들어, 제 건물들의 선들은 직선이 아니라 부드러운 곡선입니다. 당신도 아시다시피 우리가 자연 속에서 보는 선들은 직선이 아니죠.

Other than nature, what has had a big influence on you?

자연 이외에 무엇이 당신에게 큰 영향을 끼쳤나요? 

 

 

Gaudi: My father. My father was a blacksmith. I always watched him working when I was young. I saw him making beautiful things from nothing, and it was like magic to me. I wanted to be a blacksmith like him, but he told me that I could be somebody more important.

Gaudi: 제 아버지입니다. 아버지는 대장장이셨죠. 저는 어릴 때 항상 아버지가 일하시는 모습을 보았어요. 저는 그가 무(無)에서 아름다운 것들을 만들어 내시는 것을 보았습니다. 그리고 그것은 제게 마술과 같았죠. 저는 그처럼 대장장이가 되기를 원했지만, 아버지는 제게 더 중요한 사람이 될 수 있다고 말씀하셨습니다.

 

 

  

I see. Now let me ask you about Casa Mila. The house is entirely made of natural stone, and its outside looks like the flowing waves of the sea. It's the kind of house we might see in a fairy tale.

알겠습니다. 이제 Casa Mila에 대해서 여쭤 볼게요. 그 집은 전체가 자연석으로 만들어졌고, 외관이 바다의 물결치는 파도처럼 생겼죠. 그것은 우리가 동화 속에서나 볼 수 있을 법한 종류의 집이지요. 

 

 

 

Gaudi: Do you think so? Well, I didn't want to build a typical house, but maybe my design was too different. People didn't like Casa Mila when it was first built.

Gaudi: 그렇게 생각하시나요? 음, 저는 전형적인 집을 짓고 싶지 않았고, 어쩌면 제 디자인이 너무 달랐었나 봅니다. 처음 지어졌을 때 사람들은 Casa Mila를 좋아하지 않았어요.

Now let's talk about your special relationship with the Güell family. You've built Park Güell and many buildings for them, haven't you?

이제 Güell 가족과의 특별한 관계에 대해서 이야기해 봅시다. 당신은 그들을 위해서 Güell 공원과 많은 건물들을 지어 왔지요, 그렇죠?

 

 

Gaudi: Yes. Mr. Güell has been very generous to me. Thanks to him, I was able to build what I wanted to build without worrying about money.

Gaudi: 네. Güell씨는 제게 정말 관대하셨죠. 그분 덕분에 저는 돈에 대해서 걱정하지 않고 제가 짓고 싶었던 것들을 지을 수 있었습니다.

 

 

Finally, let me ask you about La Sagrada Familia, the church you've been working on for more than 40 years. Why is it taking so long to complete?

마지막으로, 당신이 40년이 넘도록 짓고 있는 성당인 La Sagrada Familia에 대해서 물을게요. 완성하는 데 왜 이렇게 오래 걸립니까?

 

 

Gaudi: One reason for the delay is my poor health, but I'm doing my best.

Gaudi: 지체되는 한 가지 이유는 저의 좋지 않은 건강 때문입니다. 하지만 저는 최선을 다하고 있습니다.
