본문 1 – Waking Up to an Earthquake
One night in February, after I had gone to bed, an earthquake hit. I woke up suddenly because my bed was shaking. I thought my brother was shaking my bed as a joke. But then I heard the mirror on my desk fall to the floor and break into pieces. I knew it wasn’t my brother then, but I still didn’t know what exactly was happening.
Soon the whole room began to shake violently, and my confusion turned to panic. My mom shouted that it was an earthquake and ran into my room. Since it was my first time experiencing an earthquake, I didn’t know how to react. I just kept saying, “What should I do?”
지진에 잠을 깨다
2월의 어느 날 밤, 내가 잠자리에 든 후, 지진이 일어났다. 나는 침대가 흔들려서 갑자기 잠에서 깼다. 나는 남동생이 장난으로 침대를 흔들고 있다고 생각했다. 하지만 그러고 나서 나는 내 책상 위에 있던 거울이 바닥으로 떨어져 산산조각 나는 소리를 들었다. 그제야 나는 내 동생이 그런 것이 아니라는 것을 알았으나, 정확히 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지는 여전히 알지 못했다.
곧 방 전체가 심하게 흔들리기 시작했고, 혼란스러움은 공포로 바뀌었다. 엄마가 지진이라고 소리를 지르며 내 방으로 뛰어 들어왔다. 지진을 경험하는 것은 처음이었기 때문에, 나는 어떻게 반응해야 할지 몰랐다. 나는 그저 “어떻게 해야 하지?”라는 말만 계속했다.
본문 2 - Waking Up to an Earthquake
My mom pulled me and my brother out of bed. We ran to the kitchen and crawled under the table. I could see the light swinging violently and books falling to the floor. Our family picture dropped from the wall and the glass covering it broke. A cup tipped over and rolled off the kitchen table. Every second, I could hear something else in the apartment break. I started to worry that the building would collapse.
엄마는 나와 내 동생을 침대 밖으로 끌어냈다. 우리는 부엌으로 달려가 식탁 밑으로 기어 들어갔다. 나는 전등이 세차게 흔들리고 책들이 바닥으로 떨어지는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 가족사진이 벽에서 떨어졌고 사진을 덮고 있던 유리가 깨졌다. 컵이 엎어져 식탁에서 굴러 떨어졌다. 매 순간, 나는 아파트에 있는 다른 무언가가 깨지는 소리를 들을 수 있었다. 나는 건물이 무너지지는 않을까 하는 걱정이 들기 시작했다.
본문 3 - Waking Up to an Earthquake
Then the shaking seemed to stop. We started crawling toward the door. At that moment, my mom’s cell phone rang. It was my dad, who was coming home from work.
He shouted, “It stopped! Get out of the building! Take the stairs! Don’t take the elevator! Hurry!” “Where are you? Are you okay?” my mom asked urgently. My dad answered, “Don’t worry. I’m okay. I was driving home when the shaking started. But I pulled over immediately. I’m listening to the radio right now to find out what’s going on.”
그때 흔들림이 멈추는 것 같았다. 우리는 문 쪽으로 기어가기 시작했다. 그 순간, 엄마의 휴대 전화가 울렸다. 바로 아빠였는데, 아빠는 퇴근해서 집에 오던 중이었다.
아빠는 소리쳤다. “진동이 멈췄어요! 건물 밖으로 나와요! 계단을 이용하고요! 엘리베이터를 타지 말아요! 서둘러요!” “어디예요? 당신 괜찮아요?”라고 엄마가 다급히 물었다. 아빠가 대답했다. “걱정 마요. 난 괜찮아요. 진동이 시작할 때 나는 운전해서 집으로 가던 중이었어요. 하지만 즉시 차를 길 한쪽에 댔어요. 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는 건지 알아보려고 지금 라디오를 듣고 있어요.”
본문 4 - Waking Up to an Earthquake
We nervously made our way down the stairs and outside. I looked around. Parts of buildings had fallen and had smashed several cars. We went to an open space to avoid more falling pieces. How could all this have happened in a few minutes?
Although I had done many earthquake drills in school, I had never thought I’d experience a real earthquake. I still get scared when I remember that night. I can’t forget the panic I felt when the furniture was shaking and things were falling to the floor. After that night, I began to take earthquake drills seriously. I realized that I should be prepared for the next earthquake, which can occur at any time.
우리는 초조한 마음으로 계단을 내려가서 밖으로 나갔다. 나는 주변을 둘러보았다. 건물 일부가 떨어져 나가 차 몇 대가 박살이 나 있었다. 우리는 더 이상의 낙하물을 피하기 위해 공터로 갔다. 어떻게 이 모든 일이 몇 분 만에 일어날 수 있었을까?
비록 학교에서 많은 지진 대피 훈련을 해 왔지만, 나는 내가 실제 지진을 겪으리라고는 한 번도 생각해 본 적이 없었다. 나는 아직도 그날 밤을 기억하면 두려워진다. 가구가 흔들리고 물건들이 바닥으로 떨어질 때 내가 느꼈던 공포를 나는 잊을 수가 없다. 그날 밤 이후, 나는 지진 대피 훈련에 진지하게 임하기 시작했다. 나는 다음 지진에 대비해야 한다는 것을 깨달았고, 다음 지진은 언제라도 발생할 수 있다.
